Wow…Valentine’s Day is coming up…and I haven’t even a CLUE what to get my darling hubby…and my kids.
First…do YOU even get YOUR kids anything?? I like to just get them their favorite little candy, a stuffed animal, just something small that I sneak into their lunch boxes at school. BUT…my plans are foiled this year. The coveted day is on Sunday no doubt. The boys would NOT like to carry around lovey animals to church, I’m certain.
Maybe they’ll all get together and decide to take me to eat Mexican food…my absolute favorite.
or not.
AND…then, I’m back to thinking about poor hubby. We are SUPPOSE to be on a budget. Spending money on something DUMB…just to say I got him a Valentine’s gift…wouldn’t make much sense.
Can you sense my frustration.
This should ONLY be a wife/mother/girl gift giving day…then, I wouldn’t have these problems!
So…while racking my brain (that is totally FRIED at this point)…I’ve come up with these options:
- A special family dinner at HOME, where you just make their favorite foods and talk about what you love about each one. (and try to make this meal a happy one, where you DON’T yell at Eli when he spills his milk for third time, or yell at Chris when he’s trying to eat with headphones in….try)
- Hubby likes foot rubs…so, try to find something FREE that your hubby likes…and surprise them by doing just that. If I grabbed my husband’s foot…and started rubbing it….he would have a heart attack at that very moment (maybe I should just go ahead and remove this idea)
- Chris is my teenage son…I thought about going into our iTunes account and pulling out ALL of his favorite songs and making him a new playlist for his ipod (I think I would probably get some music wrong…but, it’s a FREE, yet thoughtful gift, that he would use)
- Eli is my seven year old…he would just like it if we’d all play board games with him. You probably have kids just like this. Whether they like to play dress up, play outside or at the park…our kids just LOVE to get our undivided attention…and yet again…this is FREE!
- Back to hubby…I could actually really CLEAN our room. HE seems to have a mountain of CLEAN laundry on his side…(which I will NOT remove, because HE put them there)…but, I know…as a SAHM, I should take the initiative and try to help him out (even though the mountain will begin to grow again by the next week)…I DO know that an organized environment helps hubby when he comes home from a stressful day (I just wish I WAS organized!) So…yet again, another FREE idea…do you think he’d like that one???
- One year, I went to the grocery store (at a time we WERE yet again on a budget) and I just bought him all his favorite snacks. Ice Cream, cookies, chips, candy bar…just “treats” that he wouldn’t normally get….and we put them out on HIS tv tray….and he REALLY loved that one.
- Another nice Sunday afternoon idea would be to take a family bike ride to the ice cream store. (even though we’ve had problems in the past of all riding along happily together)…the thought of spending time together, enjoying a scoop of ice cream, AND burning the calories when we’re finished…perfect!
I’ll keep racking my brain this week for the PERFECT Valentine’s Day gift…that’s FRUGAL of course.

I think you have some great ideas. We are going to be doing a big family dinner here for Valentines Day.
I vote for the foot rub and a few of his fav’s on snack tray!
If he passes out, you can tell him you gave him a foot rub and he’ll never know! lol
Your bike idea reminded me of a Valentine day gift from my now x husband. He bought us both bikes. Neither of us had been on a bike for probably 20-25 years. He said we were going on a ride to a friends. The friend lived 5 miles away. Going over was fine. Fairly flat riding, no real hills. After we got there and I sat down the wear and tear of my bike seat on my butt started setting in. I hurt! But I didn’t want to be a whimp so we “rode” our bikes 5 miles back home. Actually, I did a lot of stand up riding. It hurt so bad to sit on my bike seat that I actually walked funny for a week.
My hubby and I have been at the “valentine’s day” go-round for about 30 years now and we’ve really decided that we don’t need things to show each other that we love each other.
